Light Sculpture Rendering
Diagrams
This light sculpture rendering, designed for my Studio 1 course, is inspired by the form of the oregano plant. The project challenged me to abstract a plant’s structure into a functional lighting design, exploring the relationship between nature and form. Through this process, I gained a deeper appreciation for translating natural elements into innovative design solutions.
Given the freedom to explore the the Longue Vue House & Gardens in New Orleans and photograph plant specimens for analysis, my attention gravitated towards this oregano plant due to its delicate, simple appearance and rigid, geometric structure.
After observing the oregano at the micro, mezzo, and macro scales, I created diagrams through Rhino, analyzing its symmetry, geometry, rotation, motif, and structure.
Wallpaper
Shadow Models
To synthesize my study of the oregano, I created a wallpaper by developing a constructed pattern layered with handmade reactions. I wanted to highlight the plant's rotational symmetry along a perpendicular axis as well as how the leaves gradually increase in size. This wallpaper, through the changing of the scale values of my geometry diagram, demonstrates the changing of size of the leaves, while also switching orientation to that rotational symmetry. I added my hand-drawn element of the veins of the leaves in the background to add texture to the wallpaper.
3-Dimensional Light Sculpture
Inspired by the Oregano plant, this light fixture combines a thin semi-robust armature with delicate, lightweight fabric to demonstrate the relationship between the steam and leaves of the plant. The armature and the shade display rotational symmetry along perpedicular axes, matching the structral foundation of oregano. When illuminated, the semi-transparent fabric allows the interior layers of the fixture to be visible, illustrating the incremental changes in the scales of the oregano leaves.
